Mental Wellness Foundation

“To Strive to Embrace Life, Despite Our Mental Challenges”. That is the mission statement of the Patricia Connolly Mental Wellness Foundation.

Removing the stigma associated with mental health diagnoses is part of the challenge in helping those living with it. Whether it is a mood disorder, personality disorder, or anxiety disorder, support and education during treatment is essential to maintaining mental wellness. These are not disorders that just go away. They are a part of a person’s ongoing life in most cases.

The life of Patricia “Patsy” Connolly was the inspiration for this foundation. She was an individual who struggled with Bipolar II Disorder, but went on to becomea successful R.N. and loving mother. The happiness that she felt during the last part of her life gave her a false hope that she could live without her prescribed depression medication. For reasons we will never know, Patsy decided to stop taking her medications. After five days off of her medication, she went into a depressive state that resulted in suicide.

50+million Americans are estimated to suffer from some sort of depression, while 2/3rds of those suffering do not seek treatment.

2.3 Million Americans are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, and 40% of those individuals do not seek treatment. These are people that have families, go out to dinner with their friends and loved ones, who live ordinary lives. They are people you know and care about. You work with them. They are your neighbors. Your Pastor. Your best friend. Your doctor. Your husband or wife. Your daughter or son. They could be you.

The Mental Wellness Foundation was established to raise awareness of these different types of disorders, and how important treatment is to help live healthy lives.
